Pathogenesis of sepsisDidier Heumann, Michel P. Glauser
Abstract: Arising at least as frequently in gram-positive as in gram-negative infections, sepsis is an increasing problem for critical care units. Development of a rational therapeutic approach to supplant the supportive care offered at present has been hampered by the complexity of sepsis, which seems unlikely to yield to any single pharmacologic strategy. The difficulty lies in the wide range of systems adversely affected by the various mediators unleashed in septic shock. The actions of the mediators are better understood than the triggering events that set them off. |
