Benefits of lower cholesterolJeremiah Stamler, James D. Neaton
Abstract: The mortality rate from ischemic heart disease reached a peak in the United States in 1967 and since then has declined by about 50%. Data from long-term population studies indicate that much of the reduction in rate of death from coronary heart disease can be reasonably ascribed to favorable changes in life styles: less dietary saturated fats and cholesterol, smoking cessation, and increased physical activity. Atherosclerosis atarts early in life, so primary prevention of heart disease, including lifetime maintenance of optimal cholesterol, continues to be the most sensible approach. |
