Abstract: One bright October day a dozen years ago, I hurry off to pick up some music for an approaching symphony concert. I have just finished a stint playing cello at Carnegie Hall in the orchestra for Frank Sinatra, and am looking forward to performing soon in an orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington. I enjoy the freelancer's life, the variety of playing classical symphony concerts, subbing in the New York City Ballet Orchestra, playing in the pit orchestras of Broadway shows, and even donning a funky black outfit as a member of the backup group for a female rock star.
