Abstract: The literature of performing arts medicine, as well as that of other medical specialties, contains a number of poorly-defined terms, which have been used in a variety of ways by different authors; little evidence exists regarding standardization of these definitions and nomenclature. The authors wished to provide a terminologic background for understanding and using various terms involved in treating performing artists and other occupational groups for problems affecting their performance or work activities. This background, with accompanying definitions, should encourage more precise usage of these terms and thus increase understanding and clarity in communication among health care professionals. The authors undertook a review of the performing arts and occupational medicine literature to determine current terminology and usage. After finding a number of potentially confusing or misunderstood terms, the authors compared and contrasted them on the basis of etiology, contributing factors, and diagnostic standards. The authors' personal experiences and individual philosophies and concepts also were employed in formulating their recommendations. They also reviewed published standards for hypermobility and muscle testing and recommend their use to the reader.
