Abstract: The recent introduction and marketing of margarines fortified with plant stanol esters is based on 50 years of research on plant sterols and opens a new era in long-term cholesterol management in the general population. Inclusion of plant stanol esters in the diet appears to be both safe and acceptable in all studies published to date. The strategy is successful when incorporated into a Step 1 or Step 2 diet and when combined with statins and results in an additive benefit. Plant stanol esters provide a promising new tool for optimizing the treatment of hypercholesterolemia by dietary means.
