Glutamate and schizophrenia

Abstract: There are compelling reasons to question the long-standing notion that schizophrenia results from excessive dopamine activity in certain brain regions. Antipsychotic drgs, which block dopamine receptors, are not always helpful in schizophrenia. Blocking glutamate receptors with phencyclidine, for example, induces a begavioral state not unlike that seen in schizophrenia. If indeed glutamate abnormalities underlie certain aspects of the disorder, then selecive activation of subtypes of metabotropic glutamate receptors might ameliorate the syptoms without interfering with glutamate neurotransmission in general.
