Peptide nucleic acids

Abstract: Synthetic molecules that mimic DNA but are more stable mightr substitute for DNA in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Such a molecule is peptide nucleic acid, which was designed as a reagent for sequene-specific recognition o fdouble stranded DNA. As the properties of this DNA mimic have been unraveled over the past seven years, a wider range of uses has become apparent. Peptide nucleic acids have a number of advantages over DNA as hybriddization probes in genetic detection, and they should be more suitable than DNA for anti-sense and anti-gene therapeutic agents. Inefficient uptake of peptide nucleic acids by cells is an obstacle that may be overcome by linking PNA's to peptides.
