Abstract: In contrast to leukemias and lymphomas, solid tumors in general and malignant brain tumors in particular have proved to be refractory to even the most sophisticated mobined treatment regimens. The need for a form of targeted therapy that could destroy cancer cells and spare normal cells has stimulated efforts to deliver a potent cytotoxic agent specifically to tumors. One promising prospecto combines a bacterial toxin with the ligand for a cell surface receptor that is over-expressed on tumor cells.
