Abstract: Pain and disability that result from degeneration of intervertebral discs, particularly in the lumbar spine, are common problems that are imperfectly solved by conservative management or surgery. Many prosthetic devices intended to relieve pain by restoring the function of degenerated discs have been designed and patented, but only one is being manufactured in Europe for clinical use. In addition to replicating the mechanical actions of the natureal disc, an ideal prosthesis would respond to cyclic loading in the same way as a disc does and thereby forestall further degeneration.
