Abstract: Control of the mosquito vectors continues to be an attractive approach to solving the intractable problem of malaria. Genetic engineering offers several possible techniques for making the mosquito population incapable of transmitting the malaria parasite. Based on the better understood genetics of the fruit fly, these manipulations emphasize natural mechanisms for driving fireign genes into a wild population. Knowledge of mosquito ecology that will have to be acquired should also aid conventional malaria control programs.
