Polymer-based drug delivery to the brain

Abstract: Brain tumors are proving to be vulnerable when cytotoxic drugs can be safely and effectively delivered locally. Systemic side-effects are avoided, and the benefits of adjunctive radiation are not lost. The design of a controlled release biodegradable polymer implant has been instrumental in allowing local drug delivery at the tumor site. Such devices and the drugs carried by them can be disigned specifically to work together. Suitable polymers might prove useful in many circumstances where local drug delivery is desired at accessible sites.
