Abstract: A needle that emits x-rays at its tip is being evaluated in the treatment of metastatic brain tumors. It offers a method of administering brachytherapy without the disadvantages of radioisotopes, and it controls the spatial extent of a radiation dos e so that damage to adjacent healthy tissue is minimized. because of a high radiation dose rate, the duration of treatment is typically les than an hour. A small feasibility trial has demonstrated the potential of the system for the treatment of brain metastases.
