Abstract: Transplantation of pancreatic islet cells within immunoisolating membranes has been evaluated as part of the effort to devise a biocompatible artificial pancreas that will adequately regulate blood glucose over an appreciable period of time. Recent work suggests that coated microcapsules implanted intraperitoneally or subcutaneously will perform at least as well as larger devices inserted as vascular shunts. Durable, accessible, and biocompatible biohybrid devices have broad potential applications. |
