The Evolution of Performing Arts MedicineSusan E. Harman
Abstract: In the early 1700s, the Italian physician Bernardino Ramazzini described what many consider the first summary of the occupational diseases of musicians in his treatise Diseases of Tradesmen. This chapter outlines the emergence of performing arts medicine from these beginnings and traces its development through the 20th century, with the ensuing organization of conferences, publications, clinics, and societies, to the present day.
